P&C Twilight School Celebration 2022

Congratulations to our fantastic P&C Executive (Jade, Kanako and Jay) for the wonderful Family Fun event last Friday afternoon. Our Executive team have done an amazing job all year to ensure vital programs and school improvements are provided to all students. The time and effort they put into the afternoon event is extremely appreciated.

Thank to all of the volunteers who helped out on the day and all of our amazing staff who put in a lot of time organising, setting up and running activities. The positive participation from so many students, parents and community members was lovely to see at this time of the year.

The school is extremely appreciative that P&C funds from this year have gone towards programs such as Life Education, Ditto Show, Hear and say testing for Preps, the replacement of the Prep Adventure Playground, contributing to the Chaplaincy Program and Year 6 Graduation Bears. Decisions on 2023 expenditure will be finalised at P&C meetings at the beginning of next year.

The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month marks the moment the guns fell silent on the Western Front after the bloodshed of World War I. Over the past century, this moment has been adopted across the globe as a time to remember those who served and sacrificed in all wars and conflicts.

This Remembrance Day, RSL Queensland is asking all Australians to Remember to Remember – to commit to pausing for just one minute to remember those who gave their lives in service to their country, those who returned home injured or ill, and those who bravely serve our country today.

Tuckshop Day

Please thank Gemma and her volunteers on Friday for all their hard work in providing healthy meal choices for our students and staff. Tuckshop Day is held on the first Friday in November to recognise and give a special thank you to all tuckshop workers and volunteers across Queensland state schools.

It also highlights the important role tuckshops play in school life. Providing nutritious food and drinks means families can have one less task to worry about at the start of their day and helps students to concentrate and learn well in class.

Thanking our Volunteers

Encouraging students to say please and thank you every time they use the tuckshop is important but the work that goes on to prepare the food and keep the tuckshop well-stocked is done behind the scenes. Making an extra effort to show the volunteers and tuckshop staff that all their work is appreciated by the whole school community is a wonderful way to build school spirit. Tuckshop Day provides an opportunity to give a special thank you to all tuckshop workers and recognise the valuable role these teams play in every school.

Become a school volunteer

Family members including grandparents as well as local residents are welcome volunteers in schools and especially school tuckshops. The old saying 'many hands make light work' is never truer than in school tuckshops. Volunteers don't have to spend a whole day at the tuckshop. Parents or members of the wider community can make a real contribution by volunteering for as little as an hour. For more information about volunteering opportunities in schools contact Volunteering Queensland.

All tuckshop volunteers, other than parents, are required to have a Working with Children Blue Card to ensure the safety of students. Public Holiday - Gold Coast Show Day

Friday 27th August is a public holiday for the Gold Coast Show, school will be closed.

Message from the Principal - 5th August 2021

Dear Parents / Carers,

Welcome to day 4 of home learning! Thank you for your efforts this week. It has been wonderful to see and hear about the great examples of student learning across all year levels and the high level of support that families have provided our students and our staff. Whilst I understand that it can be tricky juggling the many demands, it is vital that we all continue to commit to the directives to ensure our community remains safe for everyone and to ensure we return to normal life as quickly as possible.

As previously mentioned, at present Highland Reserve State School, like all schools, is following the stronger advice by the Chief Health Officer to have the vast majority of staff working from home with a small skeleton staff remaining at school. All staff working from home are focused on developing and supporting the learning from home program.

For this reason, we cannot cater for any students who are not the children of the tightest definition of essential workers. We also cannot cater for children whose parents are working at home themselves. Whilst this can be difficult, it is vital that parents do not put the school at risk by not following the guidelines that have been set. My reflection for parents is that if you do not follow the rules that are set, imagine the ramifications if your child was the one to bring COVID-19 into the school and worse again, pick up COVID-19 at school when they should not have been here.

It is important to know that we are all in this together. In my personal situation, my son in second year university and my daughters in year 10 and 11 are all learning from home. Their day is structured around their learning, but most importantly times throughout the day for them to exercise, do something fun and connect on-line with some friends and extended family. Please make sure your child/ren engage with the learning at home, but most importantly, make sure they are keeping healthy and happy as they navigate this challenging time themselves.

We look forward to having all students back at school soon (hopefully next Monday). Thank you for all of your efforts with home learning. Every day counts

Being at school every day counts. If your child is absent one day per week, this quickly adds up to two months of missed school in a year.

Every day counts is an initiative aiming to improve attendance at school. The initiative promotes four key messages:

all children should be enrolled at school and attend on every school day

schools should monitor, communicate and implement strategies to improve regular school attendance

truanting can place a student in unsafe situations and impact on their future employability and life choices

attendance at school is the responsibility of everyone in the community.

Find out more about the Every day counts initiative from Education Queensland.
