ANZAC Day March

The Soldier Monument on Tamborine Oxenford Road has been moved to Tallowwood Park, Rose Valley Drive in Highland Reserve. This means that the ANZAC Day march will now begin on Highland Way, starting at our school. The expectation is that all students in a leadership role will march on the day, however we would love for as many families as possible to join in.

This year we are the hosting school, and I hope to see a strong contingent of students participating.

There will be a coffee van available, and our chaplain will be organising a breakfast sausage sizzle to raise funds for our chaplaincy program. We will assemble outside the school hall at 8:30am, and the march will begin at 9:00am. The march will conclude at Tallowwood Park in Highland Reserve at the site of the Soldier Monument, followed by the ANZAC service.

Sun safety

Research shows that high ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure from the sun in childhood and adolescence significantly increases the risk of developing skin cancer.

Schools refer to the sun safety in state schools procedure and, in consultation with their community, develop and implement a sun safety policy (PDF, 821KB). This policy will outline a wide range of strategies to minimise the risks associated with UVR exposure.

Parents, families and the community also play an important role to model and reinforce the 5 ways to be sun safe with children and young people.

Tuckshop Day

Please thank Gemma, Karen, Kanako and our volunteers on Friday for all their hard work in providing healthy meal choices for our students and staff. Tuckshop Day is held on the first Friday in November to recognise and give a special thank you to all tuckshop workers and volunteers across Queensland state schools.

It also highlights the important role tuckshops play in school life. Providing nutritious food and drinks means families can have one less task to worry about at the start of their day and helps students to concentrate and learn well in class.

Thanking our Volunteers

Encouraging students to say please and thank you every time they use the tuckshop is important but the work that goes on to prepare the food and keep the tuckshop well-stocked is done behind the scenes. Making an extra effort to show the volunteers and tuckshop staff that all their work is appreciated by the whole school community is a wonderful way to build school spirit. Tuckshop Day provides an opportunity to give a special thank you to all tuckshop workers and recognise the valuable role these teams play in every school.

Become a school volunteer

Family members including grandparents as well as local residents are welcome volunteers in schools and especially school tuckshops. The old saying 'many hands make light work' is never truer than in school tuckshops. Volunteers don't have to spend a whole day at the tuckshop. Parents or members of the wider community can make a real contribution by volunteering for as little as an hour. Every day counts

Being at school every day counts. If your child is absent one day per week, this quickly adds up to two months of missed school in a year.

Every day counts is an initiative aiming to improve attendance at school. The initiative promotes four key messages:

all children should be enrolled at school and attend on every school day

schools should monitor, communicate and implement strategies to improve regular school attendance

truanting can place a student in unsafe situations and impact on their future employability and life choices

attendance at school is the responsibility of everyone in the community.

Find out more about the Every day counts initiative from Education Queensland.
