Griffith University Gold Coast Science Competition

10/09/2013
Testing the bridge strength!
Congratulations to all our science competition entrants. Of the seven entries submitted, two HRSS students accepted Highly Commended awards – Carlton (Grade 5) and Shay (Prep).

The presentation evening was a great opportunity to see the  range of science investigations conducted by students all over the Gold Coast. There were some outstanding projects which provided inspiration for many. The evening concluded with the bridge breaking event. Bridges were to be constructed to detailed specifications, and were only to be made from 1 packet of spaghetti and hot glue. While Shay’s bridge received Highly Commended for his design, his bridge held under the pressure of 2kg giving him first prize in his division. Carlton had the opportunity to test his spaghetti bridge at Parade and his took 7kg of weight!

This was a wonderful introduction for the school to this great event and I hope many more will participate next year.

Yours in Science,
Deborah McEnlly
